On Chloris
REQUESTING ME TO GIVE HER A SPRIG OF BLOSSOMED THORN
TUNE: (UNKOWN)

Burns Original

Standard English Translation

From the white-blossom'd sloe my dear Chloris requested
A sprig, her fair breast to adorn:
' No by Heaven!' I exclaim'd, ' let me perish for ever,
Ere I plant in that bosom a thorn!'

From the white-blossomed sloe my dear Chloris requested
A sprig, her fair breast to adorn:
' No by Heaven!' I exclaimed, ' let me perish for ever,
Ere (before) I plant in that bosom a thorn!'
