My Lord A-Hunting
TUNE: My Lady's Gown

Burns Original

Standard English Translation

Chorus
My lady's gown, there's gairs upon't,
And gowden flowers sae rare upon't;
But Jenny's jimps and jirkinet,
My lord thinks meikle mair upon't!
1.
My lord a-hunting he is gane,
But hounds or hawks wi' him are nane;
By Colin's cottage lies his game,
If Colin's Jenny be at hame.
2.
My lady's white, my lady's red,
And kith and kin o' Cassillis' blude;
But her ten-pund lands o' tocher guid
Were a' the charms his lordship lo'ed.
3.
Out o'er yon muir, out o'er yon moss,
Whare gor-cocks thro' the heather pass,
There wons auld Colin's bonie lass,
A lily in the wilderness.
4.
Sae sweetly move her genty limbs,
Like music notes o' lovers' hymns!
The diamond-dew in her een sae blue,
Where laughing love sae wanton swims!
5.
My lady's dink, my lady's drest,
The flower and fancy o' the west;
But the lassie that a man lo'es best,
O, that's the lass to mak him blest!

Chorus
My lady's gown, there is gores upon it,
And golden flowers so rare upon it;
But Jenny's stays and bodice,
My lord thinks much more upon it!

My lord a-hunting he is gone,
But hounds or hawks with him are none;
By Colin's cottage lies his game,
If Colin's Jenny be at home.

My lady is white, my lady is red,
And kith and kin of Cassillis' blood;
But her ten-pound lands of dowry good
Were all the charms his lordship loved.

Out over yonder moor, out over yonder bog,
Where moor-cocks through the heather pass,
There dwells old Colin's lovely girl,
A lily in the wilderness.

So sweetly move her courteous limbs,
Like music notes of lovers' hymns!
The diamond-dew in her eyes so blue,
Where laughing love so wanton swims!

My lady is trim, my lady is dressed,
The flower and fancy of the west;
But the girl that a man loves best,
O, that is the girl to make him blessed!
