TUNE: The Old Highland Laddie

Burns Original

Standard English Translation

I Hae Been At Crookieden
1.
I hae been at Crookieden -
My bonie laddie, Highland laddie!
Viewing Willie and his men -
My bonie laddie, Highland laddie!
There our foes that burnt and slew -
My bonie laddie, Highland laddie!
There at last they gat their due -
My bonie laddie, Highland laddie!

(Note:- Willie and his men were,
William Duke of Cumberland and his army)

2.
Satan sits in his black neuk -
My bonie laddie, Highland laddie!
Breaking sticks to roast the Duke -
My bonie laddie, Highland laddie!
The bloody monster gae a yell -
My bonie laddie, Highland laddie!
And loud the laugh gaed round a' Hell -
My bonie laddie, Highland laddie!

I Have Been At Crookieden (Hell)

I have been at Crookieden -
My handsome lad, Highland lad!
Viewing Willie and his men -
My handsome lad, Highland lad!
There our foes that burnt and slew -
My handsome lad, Highland lad!
There at last they got their due -
My handsome lad, Highland lad!

Satan sits in his black corner -
My handsome lad, Highland lad!
Breaking sticks to roast the Duke -
My handsome lad, Highland lad!
The bloody monster gave a yell -
My handsome lad, Highland lad!
And loud the laugh went round all Hell -
My handsome lad, Highland lad!
