To Dr. Mackenzie
AN INVITATION TO A MASONIC GATHERING

Burns Original

Standard English Translation

Friday first's the day appointed
By our Right Worshipful Anointed
To hold our grand procession,
To get a blaud o' Johnie's morals,
An' taste a swatch o' Manson's barrels
I' th' way of our profession.
Our Master and the Brotherhood
Wad a' be glad to see you.
For me, I wad be mair than proud
To share the mercies wi' you.
If Death, then, wi' skaith then
Some mortal heart is hechtin,
Inform him, an' storm him,
That Saturday ye'll fecht him.

Friday first is the day appointed
By our Right Worshipful Anointed
To hold our grand procession,
To get a screed of Johnie's morals,
And taste a sample of Manson's barrels
In the way of our profession.
Our Master and the Brotherhood
Would all be glad to see you.
For me, I would be more than proud
To share the mercies with you.
If Death, then, with danger then
Some mortal heart is menacing,
Inform him, and bully him,
That Saturday you will fight him.
